Make your Heart Sing!

Har dil jo pyaar karega, woh gaana gayega…
I was hearing this song a couple of months ago and really wanted to blog about this line. Then the moment passed and I forgot about it. It has now been a while since my last blog and this suddenly came to mind again. The song is from an old movie called Sangam, starring Raj Kapoor, Vyjyanthimala and Rajendra Kumar.
For those who need a translation,
‘Every heart that loves, will sing’
The translation doesn’t sound half as lyrical as the Hindi versionJ. You probably think this is going to be one long blog about romantic love and being ‘in love’ and how that just makes everything right. Well, romantic love is truly amazing, but I am about to go off on a slightly different tangent.
We all have our passions. Some of us love painting, some love singing, dancing, writing, reading, playing music, listening to music. I think you get the point.  I am talking specifically about those few things in life that truly bring us joy. There is a saying that goes, ‘Find a job you love and you won’t have to work another day in your life’. While I am sure many of us have jobs we like, jobs we enjoy, I don’t think too many people can claim to have jobs they ‘love’. In a utopian world, I would have been a dancer. And a famous one at that! I dabbled in dance classes, music classes, etc. while in school but eventually got so caught up in cramming for exams and trying to run the rat race that such interests got left behind.
I realized as I got older that the one thing that always brings me joy is dance. Whether I am watching someone else dance or dancing myself, it always makes me happy. This may not be utopia and I am definitely not a famous dancer, but I still wanted it to be a part of my life. I joined Shiamak Davar’s dance academy for around 4-5 months (until they moved out of Chennai and I was furious!!) and I had an absolute blast! I would actually wake up at 7:30 am on weekends and run to class. Now I live in the US and make it a point to take the zumba and salsa fitness classes in my gym. No matter how grumpy I am I always leave with a smile. A couple of weeks ago, the instructor called me over after class and asked me to show her how I shake my hip in one of the songs because she thought I did it really well!! I spent the rest of the evening roaming around with a goofy grin on my face J
What I am trying to say is, it’s easy to get caught up in work, chores and TV watching. But do yourself a favor and make your passion a part of your life. Even if it’s just once a week. Trust me, your heart will sing!
